What a dirty coil actually costs you

A fouled evaporator coil fails slowly, then expensively. Airflow drops first. Then suction pressure falls and the coil runs colder. Ice forms on the face. Liquid refrigerant returns to the compressor. Compressor failure is the end of that chain, and it costs far more than cleaning. On the outdoor side, salt-laden air within a mile of the water eats aluminum fins off the copper tubes. Head pressure climbs. Run times stretch. The unit gets hot and loud before it gets dead.

Most Goleta evaporators sit in a cased plenum above an attic gas furnace. That is a bad place to spray water. Access panels are often screwed shut and sealed with mastic. We open them, inspect the leaving-air face with a mirror and light, and check the condensate pan and trap. A clean entering side with a packed leaving side means the filter has been bypassing, common with single-point returns and disconnected flex boots pulling attic dust straight in.

Light fouling responds to a no-rinse foaming cleaner and fin combing. Heavy, matted buildup does not. That coil comes out and gets cleaned off-site, or it gets replaced.

Fixing the return leak matters more than the cleaning itself. Otherwise you are back in a year.
